Art Smith's Story

An excerpt from The Story of Art Smith:

...I did not hear much of the ceremony. I feared Aimee was dying. She was so white she scared me.

The minister had finished, and the doctors were urging everyone to go away, because Aimee must be kept quiet, when the door opened and in walked her father, her mother and my mother.

Mr. Cour went straight to Aimee and tried to ask how badly she was hurt. His voice shook so he could hardly speak.

"We're married, papa; don't be cross," Aimee said, and began to cry. I had never seen her cry before. I tried to sit up, but the doctor put his hand on my forehead and I couldn't.

"It's all right; it's all right, Aimee," her father said. "If only you are not badly hurt."

Rose Wilder Lane tossed together the serial of the trick flyer Art Smith quickly. And it shows. The serial was so popular that The Bulletin published it as a book. With very, very, very little editing from the printed page. The only photograph is on the cover of the book.

Interested in more information about San Francisco and Rose Wilder Lane?

Rose Wilder Lane's San Francisco by Trini L. Wenniger is a booklet sized publication.

The Ghost In The Little House, A Life of Rose Wilder Lane by William Holtz-has footnotes and a full bibliography. Very useful. You don't have to agree with his thesis to learn from his book.

West From Home, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, is a series of letters sent to her husband, Almanzo, while on a visit to her daughter Rose. I do wonder if all the information in the letters was published, or if they were selectively edited.

A Spinoff: No Swiney

I have been posting comments at this site: pioneergirl for quite awhile. Time to break out and make my own blog. My main research focus lately has been magazine articles written by Rose Wilder Lane. And the never ending reels of microfilm from the De Smet News.

What does the death of Goldie the Shetland pony have to do with Nellie Oleson? That is a tangent.

Why does every package of Tillamook dairy products make me think of Nellie Oleson? Another tangent.

Nellie Oleson is not my main tangent. But tangents pop up, like daisies, where you least expect them. And Little House(tm) research has creeping tendrils and thorns that poke you, but the bloom is quite nice, not unlike a rose.
